This past weekend was Summerfest 2007 at Riverside Speedway, a PASS sanctioned track.  It was two nights of great racing that Mother nature tried to cancel, but with a little persistence and a lot of work turned into some great racing.  Friday night was the Jake McDowell Memorial race, and Saturday brought the big guns, the PASS Super Late Models.

Friday night started with a tribute to Jake McDowell as all the cars in the pit area paraded around the track.  The rain then moved in.  Once the track was dry, a decision was made to run the races without the qualifiers.

The Street Stock 100 lap race was up first, with the 10 of Alan Maynard on the pole, with the 06 of Michael Moore outside his door.  Maynard took the lead, as the 71 of Ruben Call moved into 3rd.  The yellow flew on lap 2.  The restart never really got started as something broke on the 20 of David Greenslit, forcing him up the track.  As he slid up the track he got into the 29 of Chris Meunier, sending both of them into the tire wall at the end of pit road.  Maynard took the restart.  Call moved to the 2nd spot on lap 4.  Tori Delabruere, in the 76, rocketed into 3rd then 2nd on lap 7.  On lap 11 Delabruere and Maynard get together bringing out the caution and sending them both to the rear.  Moore gains the advantage on the next restart, but suddenly drops back, giving Call the lead.  The following lap the 95 of Alex Theroux pulls ahead to the lead.  On lap 33 the 12 of Tyler Therrien moves to the 2nd spot.  On lap 34 the 36 of Chris Hodgdon loops around.  On lap 40 the 27 of Troy Randall gains back the lap he had lost for pitting early in the race.  On lap 48, Moore slides up into Delabruere, sending here hard into the back stretch wall.  Theroux took the advantage on the restart.  On lap 56 Randall had made it back to the top 3, and on lap 64 moved into 2nd.  By lap 77 Randall had caught up to Theroux, and on lap 84 made his way under Theroux for the lead.  Randall after coming back from a lap down takes the win, followed by Theroux and Therrien.

The Daredevil Novice division was up next.  The 8 of Tyler Leighton started on the pole, with the 68 of Keith Lord outside.  Leighton takes the lead, as the 29 of Brendan Hunt moves into 3rd.  The caution came out on lap 2 as the 62 of Dilyn Switser and the 93 of Cameron Bowen get together in turn 3.  Leighton takes the lead, as Hunt moves into 2nd.  On lap 4 Switser gains the 3rd spot, and on lap 8 takes the 2nd spot.  Bowen moves to 3rd on lap 8 also.  At the flag, it was Leighton, followed by Switser and Bowen

The Daredevil Veterans were up next.  The 73 of Riley Hartshorn started on the pole with the 07 of Manville Powers III outside his door.  Hartshorn takes the lead, as the 12 of Brett Gervais moved into 2nd, and the 5 of Jesse Switser moves into 3rd.  On lap 4 Switser moves to 2nd and Cody Hodge in the 72 overtakes 3rd.  Switser takes the lead on lap 5, bringing Hodge with him for 2nd.  Hodge takes the lead on lap 7.  On lap 13 Switser gets under Hartshorn, and spins out.  Hodge takes the restart, and the win, followed by Switser and Gervais.

The Late Models took to the track next.  The 12 of Mike Paquette started on the pole, with the 69 of Donald Franklin outside.  Paquette took the lead.  On lap 3, the 36 of Howard Switser moves to 2nd.  Ryan Delabruere, in the 76, takes over 3rd on lap 9.  Switser moves to the lead on lap 13.  The yellow flies, as the 12vt of Reno Gervais goes off turn 3.  Switser takes the restart, as Delabruere overtakes 2nd.  On lap 18 the 32 of Jeff Marshall moves into 3rd.  On lap 32 Switser and Delabruere get together, but recover quickly.  On lap 35 Delabruere takes the lead.  Delabruere takes the checkers for his 1st Late Model win, followed by Switser and Marshall.

The final race of the night was the Super Stocks.  I think this is the first time I’ve seen fog so thick, you really couldn’t fully see the cars across the track.  The 38 of Robin Hood started on the pole, with the 55 of Jamie Longley outside.  Longley takes the lead, as the 01 of Brian Gosselin moves to 2nd, and the 31 of Brian Middleton moves to 3rd.  Denny Degreenia in the 8 overtakes Middleton on lap 2.  The yellow flies on lap 10 as the 04 of Nathan Swallow and the 7 of Cody Leblanc get together.  Longley takes the next two restarts, as the 77 of James Lambert moved to 3rd.  On lap 22 Lambert ducks under Gosselin for the 2nd spot.  The yellow flies for a bunch of cars everywhere in turn 2 into the backstretch.  Longley takes the restart, but it is short lived as Lambert takes the lead.  On lap 23, Degreenia moves into 3rd.  On lap 25 Gosselin and Longley get together and are sent to the rear.  Lambert takes the restart, as the 13 of Luke Shannon moves into 2nd.  At the checkers it is Lambert followed by Shannon and Degreenia, but Degreenia gets penalized 2 positions for rough riding after a race, giving the 3rd spot to Swallow.

Saturday night saw a little rain delay, but the Angels were first to take the field.  I apparently had a slight lapse of memory, because I forgot the Angels don’t run a qualifier, so I didn’t take notes on the beginning of the race.  The 36 of Allison Brown took the lead early in the race, and never looked back.  Brown took the checkers followed by the 72 which I believe was Heather Hodge, and the 5 of Traci Nelson.

The Dwarfs were up next.  The 19 of Allyn Briggs started on the pole, with the 20 of Bobby Riley outside his door.  Briggs took the initial lead, but Riley Battled back.  The 28 of Ernie Baker jumped to the lead on lap 2.  On lap 3, the 2 of Eric Hall moved to the 2nd spot, and on lap 5 the 22 of Dana Huoppi took 3rd.  On lap 20 the 4 of Nathan Brown moves to 3rd, but Huoppi regains the lead through lap traffic.  Baker takes the win followed by Hall and Huoppi.

The STAR (Senior Tour Auto Racers) took the field next.  These racers put on a good show in vintage race cars.  They race a rather odd way, in that there are actually 2 divisions on the track at the same time.  The winner of the Modifieds was the 2x, and the winner of the Sportsmen’s was the 77.

The PASS Modifieds were up next.  Former Riverside Daredevil Driver Sammy Gooden Jr. started on the pole, with the 29 of Greg Ellis outside.  Gooden took the lead, as the 34 of Richie Morse moved to 2nd, and the 8 of Jason Taylor moved to 3rd.  The 33 of Bill Dixon spins around in the turn 3 infield.  Gooden takes the restart. Lap 2 the 14 of Scott McDaniel goes over turn1.  Gooden again takes the restart, as Taylor moves to 2nd.  Gooden and Taylor battle as the 5 of Chris Staples moves into the 3rd spot.  Lap 15 caution, Gooden pits and is done for the night.  Taylor takes the lead and the 9 of Mark Lucas overtakes 2nd.  On lap 27 Staples overtakes the 2nd spot.  At the stripe it is Taylor, followed by Staples, and Lucas.

The Outlaws were up next.  The 17 of Steve Patnaude started on the pole with the 74 of Doug Laleme outside.  Laleme took the lead as the 68 of Jonathan Ledger moved to 2nd.  On lap 3 the 1 of Kenny Marier moved to 3rd.  Patnaude loops the car on lap 8 bringing out the caution.  Laleme takes the restart, but Ledger is right with him.  The go at it a few laps before Ledger settles back for 2nd.  Laleme takes the win followed by a near photo finish for 2nd with Marier getting 2nd and Ledger 3rd.

The Pass Super Late Models took to the track next.  The 15 of Stephen Berry was on the pole, with the 33 of Richie Dearborn outside.  Berry took the lead as the 0 of Bill Penfold moved to 2nd.  On lap 3 the 17 of Travis Benjamin, and the 35 of Derek Ramstrom get together and go around.  Berry takes the restart, as the 29 of Trevor Sanborn moves to 3rd.  The caution flies on lap 63 for debris in turn 4.  Berry again takes the restart, as Penfold flies off turn 1.  Berry again takes the restart, and the 98 of Adam Bates goes off turn 1.  Sanborn takes this restart, and Berry starts to fade back as the 47 of Kelly Moore moves to 2nd on lap 75.  On lap 87, the Dearborn overtakes 3rd.  The caution flies on lap 98.  Sanborn again takes the lead.  Moore takes the lead away from Sanborn on lap 103.  Penfold and Berry get together on lap 111 bringing out the caution.  Moore takes the restart, and the win, followed by Sanborn and Dearborn.  Rounding out the top 5 were the 54 of Johnny Clark, and the 4 of Ben Rowe.

The Cyclones closed out the evening with some exciting racing.  Unofficially the top 5 were the 20 of Charlie Rockwell, the 32 of Chris Caron, the 27 of Aric Cole, the 48 of Scott Marshall, and the 41 of Jeff Ainsworth.
