Welch captures “Clash 150” at Riverside Speedway
Lancaster’s Quinny Welch got to the front early and survived a late race restart, capturing the $5000 to win Munce’s Superior “Clash of the Titans” at Riverside Speedway Sunday.
The field of 28 was brought to green by Riverside rookie driver Jesse Switser. 2009 winner Wayne Helliwell Jr took to the front by lap one and had Welch nipping at his tires by lap two. Welch got by Helliwell and led for the remainder of the day.
The final 50 laps, pit strategy came into play, with several teams ducking into the pits for right side tires, while Welch remained in front.
A final caution on lap 147, led to a three lap shoot out with first eight cars in the line-up all on the lead lap. Welch had Roger Brown to his outside for the final green flag of the day. The smooth driving Welch never wiggled coming out of the corner and held off all challenges for the huge pay day. Brown finished second and WMMP super star Stacy Cahoon a strong run for third. Groveton’s Corey Mason finished fourth and Helliwell fifth. Heat wins went to Helliwell, Mason, and Welch, with consolation checkers flying for Brandon Lambert and Cody Hodge.
The PASS Modifieds and Sportsman were on hand at Riverside, with the tour regulars taking on the speedway’s Outlaw division.
The modifieds were 13 strong coming to the green flag for the 40 lap main event. Veteran racer Alan Wilson built up a huge advantage during a long green flag run. However, that disappeared on a caution that allowed Conway’s Andy Shaw to pull along side Wilson. Shaw got his #66 to stick on the outside groove, working his way by Wilson and racing into victory lane for the second time at Riverside this season. Taking home the third spot was Scott McDaniel of Livermore, Maine.
Twenty-one drivers roared to the green flag in the seventy-five lap Sportsman main event. When it was all said and done, Oakland’s Mike Landry carried the checkers. The #38 of Dan McKeage finished second and the #18 of Carey Martin was third. The top three finishing Riverside Speedway regular outlaw drivers were Jeff Marshall racing home fifth, Dan Sidney eighth, and Doug Laleme tenth.
The final event of the day was a 100 lap enduro for 4 and 6&8 cylinder cars. There were just two stoppages during the event that took less than 30 minutes to complete.
In the four cyclinder portion, Nick Pilotte took full advantage of his front starting spot and raced to the first place finish. Current Cyclone point leader Lorin Vear was runner-up and Jeff Ainsworth came in third.
Greg Wolcott made his first trip to Riverside a successful one, capturing the 6&8 race. Dan Roy drove his #41 to a second place run and newcomer Kris Camire took home the third spot.
